What is My Cozy Aquarium about?

My Cozy Aquarium is exactly what you imagine it to be. For ocean lovers, this is your chance to care for your very own slice of the sea. Four ecosystems to explore and plenty of species to play with, so, ready for a deep dive?

Gameplay, or something’s fishy here

My Cozy Aquarium is pretty straightforward in how it greets new players. There’s no introduction, no tutorial. After a (somewhat long) loading screen, the game drops you directly into your first aquarium. You’ll have to click around to figure out what to do and what all those buttons are for.

Let’s start our own version of Atlantis!

You start off with 10 dollars in your pocket, just enough to buy your first mystery bag of fish.
Yes, mystery. You never know which species you’ll get. Once you own them, each fish has its own “incubation time,” depending on its rarity. You can sell your fish for profit, but only once they’ve reached adulthood.

While they’re still growing, you’ll need to take care of their environment by checking four key stats: feeding, water temperature, cleanliness, and oxygen level. Each of these is managed through small mini-games.
Honestly,  these mini games are quick and easy to handle.

Here’s what happens when you don’t clean your aquarium. Poor things.

You can also upgrade your tools (which makes the mini-games a bit easier) and buy decorations for your tank. However, decorations don’t seem to affect gameplay or fish behaviour; they’re purely cosmetic. There’s also a collection book that keeps track of every fish species you’ve raised. Like the decorations, it doesn’t seem to influence the gameplay in any meaningful way.

That said, My Cozy Aquarium involves a lot of waiting, waiting for the fish to grow, waiting for the tank to need attention, waiting, waiting, waiting. As you can probably tell, this kind of idle gameplay really isn’t my thing. My main issue is that I don’t really see the fun side of it.

In terms of settings, there isn’t much to customize. You can choose the language and adjust music and sound-effect volume, but that’s about it.

Art and Sound of My Cozy Aquarium

The art style of My Cozy Aquarium is cutesy, round and colourful. Given that the scene is mostly static, after a while it can feel a little flat, as there is no real sense of time passing in the aquarium. No lights changes, or anything dynamic.

A little mention for the holographic fish that you can collect (they are really pretty to look at!).

Do you see the shiny ones?

It’s also worth noting that, despite the cartoony aesthetic, the fish are all based on real ocean species, which adds a nice touch of authenticity.

As for the sound design, a soft melody is playing on loop in the background. As we could expect from this kind of game, the ocean ambience is nice (listening to the little bubbly underwater sounds has ALWAYS calmed me down)

Conclusion

My Cozy Aquarium is a nice idea. It has the right ingredients, relaxing ocean sounds, cute fish species, and simple mini-games, but despite all that, I found myself checking the clock multiple times while playing. And for me, that’s never a good sign.

I can see why some people might enjoy it; it could be a gentle, entry-level experience in the simulation genre. But as someone who plays a lot of Sims, there just isn’t enough to do here to keep me engaged.

Final verdict: I Don’t Like It I don't like it
