Here we are, at the end of December- yet another year gone in the blink of an eye. It was a great year in gaming, with tons of games being published in all genres and art styles. I tried to tackle that long backlog of older titles this year, so I haven’t played as many new games as I did last year. Still, there were quite a few titles that I’ll remember for a while long after I’ve played them. So, here are my best games of 2024 in no particular order.
Best Games of 2024: Kalina’s Choice

Loco Motive
Loco Motive is an Autumn release but a game that immediately springs to mind when thinking of the best games. It’s a point-and-click adventure with excellent story writing, humor, charming and fleshed-out characters, and mysteries afoot to solve.

Hades 2
Hades 2 is the long-awaited and rightfully acclaimed sequel to Hades. It’s a rogue-lite dungeon crawler steeped in Greek myths and legends. While the game was released in Early Access, it is a polished, well-crafted experience that puts many games in the final version to shame. Moreover, the developers have continuously released new updates with more content since the game was published.

Été
Été was, for me, the perfect Summer game—with a lot of color, genuine human relationships, and a sense of discovery and wonder at every step. It’s a walking simulator, mostly, where we walk around a city devoid of color and, well, color it. We collect drops of color and then paint pictures. The game was a true pleasure to play!

Between Horizons
Between Horizons is a classic point-and-click pixel detective adventure set in the distant future on a spaceship—in other words, it’s a crossover between my favorite genres—detective and sci-fi. I was in a bit of a gaming slump when I started playing Between Horizons, but the game immediately grabbed my attention. I played the whole thing in one sitting, not unlike last year’s The Invincible, and needless to say, I really loved it.

Minami Lane
Minami Lane is a cute and cozy city builder in which we build single streets full of shops and dwellings. If a bit short, it’s a perfect puzzle game to relax, with adorable visuals, a beautiful color palette, and pleasant music. Minami Lane perfectly balances challenge and cuteness with enough quirkiness and cats to satisfy any cozy game fan.
Final Thoughts
My gaming resolution for 2024 was to play more of the older games I had, and I did. For 2025, I am considering a new approach – playing whatever strikes my fancy for as long as I want. With Steam Cloud saves, I can install and uninstall games to my heart’s content without stressing about not finishing the game first. From what I see on my wishlist, next year’s gaming crop will be as enjoyable as this year’s, and when the time comes to choose the best games for 2025, it will indeed be difficult! I can’t wait.
